Life in the "Real World"

Why is it, usually during high school graduation ceremonies, that a speaker often says to the young graduates, "when you get out into the real world..."? What do people think, high school, jobs, family life etc. is NOT the real world? And where do they think kids live, in a protected bubble? What do you think this says to youth?
